I am mostly a street photographer. Which means I take photographs of strangers on the street without permission.
I am perfectly capable of saying 'Hello, would you mind' and waiting politely, but the shot would be gone at 'Hello'.
Street shots appear when they are ready, not the subject, not the photographer. They are caught not made and gone in the blink of an eye.
You do not ask the scene to wait while you check settings or your subject fixes their hair. You anticipate the elements (composition, emotion, narrative) falling into place and press the shutter before they fall apart
The subject is natural in that moment. They do not say 'cheese'. They do not do their insta face. They are not performing.
Everyday people doing everyday things can be magnificent. Heroic.
